Athletes for Literacy
Thank you for your interest in our Athletes for Literacy program. Athletes for Literacy is a partnered program between Bremen Public Schools and Bremen Public Library. A venture like this encompasses both Bremen Public School’s mission statement: “The Bremen Public School community works collaboratively to provide a safe, nurturing environment where students are empowered academically and socially to succeed in life.” And one of Bremen Public Library’s values: “Lifelong Learning and Literacy: we support opportunities for patrons of all ages, abilities and ethnicities to learn and grow throughout their lives; inspiring people to grow and learn intellectually, emotionally and culturally.”
This program combines our beliefs for the benefit of the students, athletes, and literacy.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
- BHS athletes sign up to volunteer to read a picture book to an elementary class (grades PreK through 5th).
- On any selected Friday during that HS athletes study hall, athlete will show up in “uniform”, read a book, and talk about what it means to be a BHS athlete.
- The goal is to promote literacy for all ages, and to promote BHS athletics.
Please note that due to the availability of our athletes, the time requested might not be available. BPL’s YA Librarian will contact you directly should this happen. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ryan Calhoun at: rcalhoun@bremen.lib.in.us or call the Bremen Public Library at 574-546-2849.
